Grace Before Dying

The Clare Gallery is honored to present the exhibition, Grace Before Dying. An extraordinary traveling exhibition featuring both Lori Waselchuk's photography and Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola Prison) hospice quilts. Showcasing both creative processes, the exhibition highlights the nationally recognized hospice program, which was started in 1998 by a staff nurse and a team of inmate volunteers. Their efforts were influential in changing the tone of the prison from "dismissive dishonor" to humane dignity and reverence towards terminally ill inmates.

Photography by award-winning artist, Lori Waselchuk and quilts by incarcerated hospice volunteers reveal a culture of caring and compassion. Both mediums convey a level of intimacy that is not usually seen. The works also challenge stereotypes of the incarcerated and help viewers better understand what life is like "on the inside" for terminally ill inmates, as well as those serving long-term and life sentences.

The Clare Gallery is honored to host Grace Before Dying from September 9 - November 1, 2015. The exhibition and its events are being made possible thanks to generous underwriting from Carmon Community Funeral Homes in Greater Hartford. We wish to thank them and encourage everyone to visit our Gallery during this exhibition. The exhibition and an artist's reception will be free and open to the public. Free parking is available directly across from the church in the Saints Lot, and the facility is handicapped accessible.
