Personalizing a Funeral
BURIAL AND CREMATION OPTIONS
BURIAL:
At Carmon Community Funeral Homes, we pride ourselves on our ability to personalize and individualize each funeral service so that it is a truly memorable experience and a fitting tribute. We offer many unique and special services that set us apart from other funeral homes. The way a person is remembered is as unique as the person him/herself. We listen carefully to what your wishes are and pay attention to every detail as we carry them out. Burial or entombments in a mausoleum are just a couple of the choices available. Our prices vary to reflect the charges for the services and merchandise that you select. For this reason, we have included a listing of our services on our Planning Ahead page. On that page, you may select the services and choices that reflect your wishes and submit it to us. We will then respond with a cost. CREMATION:
Some families choose cremation over traditional burial. At Carmon Funeral Homes, we own and operate our own crematory, Mt. Laurel Crematory, on the premises of our Windsor location. By owning and operating our own crematory, we are more flexible and can be more respectful of your specific beliefs and customs, as the deceased never leaves our care. All of this provides you with additional peace of mind. Cremation, like burial, is a manner of disposition and your choice of services before or after cremation is extensive.
Mt. Laurel Crematory is available for your inspection. Our knowledgeable staff can assist with any questions or concerns. Click here to view our prices for Cremation Caskets, Alternative Containers, and Urns.
We have a wide range of services available. For more information on our cremation services, please e-mail us, call us at 860-688-2200 or toll free at 1-888-688-8475. We are extremely flexible and will do whatever we can to fulfill your wishes.
PLANNING AHEAD
Planning for the future is something that we do in quite a few areas of our lives. Yet, people are always asking us, Why would someone preplan their funeral? Now more than ever, it is important to plan ahead. Preplanning frees the surviving family from making decisions at a difficult time, and provides great peace of mind.
Preplanning also allows you to lock in funeral expenses at today’s costs. A complete price list is available upon request. In most situations, funds invested today, in compliance with Connecticut law, will be sufficient to cover the total cost of the funeral at the time of need.
If you would like to begin the preplanning process online, our form allows you to submit your wishes or ask for more information. We welcome any comments or suggestions. You may also e-mail or call us at 860-688-2200 or toll-free 1-888-688-8475 to set up an appointment, either in our offices or in your home.

Your Benefits
At Carmon Community Funeral Home we can also help you secure and understand all of your benefits and walk you through the process. Just click on any of these topics for more information:
WILLS & PROBATE
It is very important to have a Will. When someone dies having left a last Will and Testament, the law requires that the Will be filed with the local probate court within 30 days after death. The probate court or your attorney will describe what steps to take next. If someone dies without a Will, this is called intestate. The law controls distribution of the estate. Your attorney or the probate court should be consulted whether the deceased had a Will or not.
Among the functions of the probate court are the following:
It determines whether or not there is, in fact, a proper Will of the deceased and provides a method to determine whether or not the Will was revoked prior to death.
It sets up an orderly procedure to maintain and preserve the deceased's assets during the time between death and transfer of those assets to the proper persons.
It establishes a method for accounting for all the deceased's assets.
It supervises and arbitrates the reporting and determination of the Connecticut Succession Taxes and other Taxes.
There are many other functions of the probate court. Please contact the court in the town where you reside for more information. Below is a list of the local probate court offices and phone numbers.

DEATH CERTIFICATE and CERTIFIED COPIES
This is the permanent record of the death which contains the cause of death signed by the doctor, the vital statistics supplied by the family, the final disposition information and our signature. This certificate is filed in exchange for a burial, cremation, or removal permit. We will take care of all of this for you, including ordering as many certified copies as you may need for insurance claims and estate purposes. The original is filed in the town where the death occurred and the copies are obtained from that town. The legal fee per copy anywhere in the State of Connecticut is currently $5.00. The fee varies in other states.
CHANGING AUTOMOBILE OWNERSHIP
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles can be reached at, 60 State St., Wethersfield, 860-566-4710 or 1-800-842-8222. These are general information numbers. Request DMV Form H-13. This form can be requested on-line at their website, www.dmvct.org. It is important to notify your insurance agent to confirm continued coverage during the period from the date of death to the time the registration is transferred.
CHANGING REAL ESTATE OWNERSHIP
These transfers are dependent on the provisions of the Will. It is best to consult with your attorney concerning this.
SOCIAL SECURITY
The current death benefit is $255 and is payable only to a surviving spouse or to dependent children. In some instances, the surviving spouse's monthly benefit may increase. If there are dependent children who are under the age of 18 (or over 18 and enrolled full-time in school), there are usually monthly benefits paid for/to these children. The toll-free number is 1-800-772-1213 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or call us for assistance.
LIFE INSURANCE
If you are the beneficiary, life insurance claims must be submitted with a certified copy of the death certificate. Call the company or your agent to request a claim form. In submitting the claim form, you will need to send a certified copy of the death certificate with it. The funeral home will obtain this for you or you may get it through the town clerk in the town in which the death occurred. The claim form is usually easy to understand and can be completed in a few minutes. If you need help with this, you may call your agent, the insurance company, or we will be glad to help you. If you plan to use the proceeds toward payment of the funeral expenses, we will provide an assignment form and submit it to the insurance company.
DEATH AWAY FROM HOME
Be assured that when a death occurs out of town or away from home, we can still handle all of the necessary arrangements. If death occurs here and services are to be elsewhere or if the death occurs out of town and the services are to be here, we can help. Because of our activities with our state, regional and national associations, we know many other funeral service professionals personally. You can be sure that we would be recommending the most competent, qualified, and professional firms. Please either email us, or call us toll-free, 1-888-688-8475, for more information.
Because we coordinate all the arrangements with the other funeral home, any expenses involved will not be duplicated. Most of the time, the only additional expenses with out-of-town arrangements are those of transportation. If the death or burial is in a foreign country, our network of international associates is an invaluable help. We will handle all the documentation necessary for the foreign consulates.
We can also help with travel arrangements for family members. If they choose to make their own arrangements, they should always request a "bereavement" fare, which is usually less.
CASKETS AND OUTER BURIAL CONTAINERS
We maintain casket selection rooms in our Windsor, Granby, Suffield and South Windsor funeral homes. Traditional burial caskets, Orthodox Jewish Caskets and Cremation and Alternative containers in all price ranges are available. You may inspect them at any time in complete privacy. The caskets we sell are manufactured by American companies and are of the highest quality. These companies include Milso Casket Co., Batesville Casket Co., Florence Casket Co., York Casket Co., and Clarksburg Casket Co. There are no delivery charges to any of our funeral homes.
A casket should be selected with care, keeping in mind how the deceased lived and finances available. No family should go beyond its means. The casket is certainly not the funeral and our complete services are provided no matter what casket is selected. A price list will be shown to you prior to your selection.
Outer Burial Containers or Vaults are required by most all cemeteries in our area. This lessens the care of filling sunken graves and allows a burial to be made years afterward next to that vault with no disturbance to that grave. We have a complete range of Wilbert Vaults in our selection rooms to meet all cemetery requirements and family preferences. A price list will be shown to you prior to your selection.
