Bertha (Gibson) McGarrah, 100, of Hartford, died peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2013. Born January 5, 1913, the daughter of Rev. Bryant Gibson and Ella Jones Gibson, in Sumter County, GA. She graduated from Fort Valley High and Industrial School, continuing her education at Junior College in Fort Valley, GA. As a young adult, she met and married James D. McGarrah 1938, and with her husband, relocated to Connecticut, where she attended St. Joseph's College, W. Hartford, CT, earning the B.A. degree, and later received the Master's Degree in Education from the University of Connecticut. She was a teacher for the Bolton Elementary School system for 20 years. Bertha was a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Epsilon Omicron Omega Chapter. At an early age, Bertha joined Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, Americus GA, and after relocating to Hartford, Bertha joined Union Baptist Church where she remained an active and dedicated member for sixty-eight years serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent for over twenty-five years, and was a member of the Dorcas Missionary Ministry. She also celebrated her faith through membership with the Greater Hartford Unit of Church Women United. Bertha and James McGarrah were blessed with two children, Dwight D. McGarrah (Erma McGarrah) and Jacqueline M. Woods. Her extended family includes five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews who are now joined together in mourning. The family will celebrate their memories of her on Monday, November 4, 2013, calling hour at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 AM at Union Baptist Church, 1921 Main Street, Hartford, CT. Interment will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, 580 Elm Street, Rocky Hill, CT.
