Rita (Bessette) Leary, 95, of Windsor, beloved wife for 69 years of James Joseph Leary, Jr., passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 17, 2013, surrounded by her family at her home. Born in Stonington on August 25, 1917, daughter of the late Arsene and Rose Anna (Martin) Bessette, she was raised in Stonington and had lived in Hartford before moving to Windsor in 1972. After graduating from high school, Rita continued her education at the St. Francis School of Nursing in Hartford and earned her Registered Nurse designation. She was a private duty nurse in the Hartford area including at St. Francis Hospital and at Mt. Sinai Hospital. In her spare time, Rita enjoyed sewing and crafts. She especially enjoyed making Christmas ornaments and decorations throughout the year and would give many of them to family and friends. Rita was also skilled at quilting, basketry, and making teddy bears and stained glass. Most of all, she will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, James J. Leary, III and his wife Jane Lenox Leary of West Hartford; three daughters, Colleen A. Leary of Windsor, Joan Leary Thomas and her husband John of Winter Springs, Florida, and Patricia "Pixie" Leary Badeau and her husband Paul of Manchester; a sister, Theresa Fallon and her husband Richard of Pawcatuck; six grandchildren, Paul Badeau and his wife Jennifer of Manchester, David Badeau and his wife Heather of Ellington, Rebecca Dilmore and her husband Clay of Florida, James Leary, IV of Massachusetts, David Thomas of Florida, and Sean Leary of Brooklyn, NY; and two great grandchildren, Charlotte Badeau and Olivia Badeau. She was predeceased by four brothers; and three sisters. A graveside service will be held at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield at the convenience of the family. The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the House of Bread, Inc., 1453 Main St., Hartford, CT 06120.
