Roger Irvin Smith, 89, of Sarasota, FL died peacefully at his summer home in Centerbrook. He was passionate about flying and sailing, growing up doing both in Mystic. Served as an instructor in the Army Air Corps and the Civil Air Patrol in WWII. He enjoyed a long career as a project engineer with Pratt & Whitney. He was a student and practitioner of Early Colonial Architecture. He had a keen sense of humor which led to a lifetime of storytelling. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Anne Tyler Smith; children, Peter, Mark, Allison, Stephen and Richard; along with 11 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 29, 10 a.m., at the First Congregational Church, 993 Main Street, South Windsor. Burial will follow to Indian Hill Cemetery in Middletown.
